21 and Over Only Please...(ha)

Thot you'd get a kick out of seeing this wine shot we did for a publication outlet on spec. Originally set it up with the perfect, by-the-book lighting and staging...only to find it looking incredibly, unequivocally boring. So, as usual, I then said, throw the rule book away and go crazy; that's when, of course, we came up with THE shot.

I forget the vintage...but I suppose the benefit of being a model on shoots like these is that you get to drink the props!(no wonder I have to drive so many models home after shoots...)

Behind the Wheel with Stephanie B.

Ingredients for the perfect shoot:

One hunter green-colored Chevrolet pickup, circa early 1970s vintage

A healthy helping of Aspen, Birch, Oak and expansive greens on seven acres

Several full cans of mosquito spray!

A dash of diffused sunlight via light cloud cover, just when you need it

One totally sweet, charming and beautiful young woman!

Mix well and get ready to serve up the results:

A Summer Moment

This is the kind of image that just stops you in your tracks.

It embodies the carefree innocence of these two young children, sharing the joy and the wonder and the endless dream that is summer. I'm very proud of this photograph.

I had so much fun with this portrait commission. These two personified the boundless energy and wide-eyed wonder of childhood...and they boasted beaming smiles that would light up any landscape, as true and luminous as the summer sun.

It's the kind of thing that makes my job so worthwhile...

Maya and Maria

That sounds like a poem..or a great song title! Something dreamy and continental and...

Well, anyhoo, I spent an afternoon following these two lovely young ladies. Maya has lovely, flowing long hair and is quite a wonderful little ballerina; she also has developed quite a fondness for wanting you to push her very HIGH on the swings!! Her little sister Maria will absolutely melt your heart when she breaks into that smile of hers and starts singing her merry little songs; and, apparently, I need to start learning the words to the latest children's songs so I can sing along with her(I mean, I know the "ABC's" song and the Barney song and supercalifragilistic...does that count?).

They definitely know the secret to the magic of life. Skipping and prancing through a summer afternoon, courting the magic of laughter, splashing through the puddles of rain water, drinking in the scent of wildflowers, relishing the warmth of the day...

Ahhh...to be a kid again.

A glimpse at what is on MY refridgerator door...

Hats off to the class of 2007. While they enjoy their summer, I thought it would be fun to review a sampling of the fun we had with graduation announcements this year...

From Miss Minnesota USA to Hollywood and beyond...

Meet my friend Sarah Cahill!

I first worked with Sarah about five years ago, right before she entered and won the Miss Minnesota USA competition. In the subsequent national pageant, she won the prestigious title of being named "Miss Photogenic" by viewers all over the world. She also starred in the broadcast of Miss USA Fear Factor aired adjacent to the pageant.

She's been in Hollywood since...and you may have seen her on various TV shows and/or commercials. I always enjoy hanging out and shooting with her; she's an amazing person.

And apparently, we have a thing for hanging out in Minneapolis parking garages!

Vacation Post...Or, on a Dreamy Summer's Day...

I've been submitting magazine article JPEGS, editing my portrait shoots, posting image galleries, archiving high-res files, retouching ordered images and designing image collages...now, I am ready for a break! Even if it's just for a long weekend...

So, while the dragonflies buzz lazily about us and the humid breeze lifts through the aspen branches and we watch the horizon for the towering build-ups of thunderheads, I give you the look of summer...

On the Road...in German Country

Yesterday, in the previous post, I told you about the major magazine job I shot in German Country earlier this week. Today, I want to take you on the road with me, re-living the best of German Country southeast of Bismarck. The people, the food, the landscape...it's all too amazing to miss out on...so this is a total, must-see road trip. And when you go...

Spend some time in KULM North Dakota. Friendliest little town anywhere...perhaps partly because there are about twelve churches in town and only one bar. While there:

You're going to like it so much, you'll want to stay overnight. You can do so at The Main Stay, right in the heart of town. Only $25.00 will get you a room for the night...and you'll feel like you are staying at the home of some wonderful, new-found friends...namely, proprietors Jan and Emery. You can't get any closer to Small-town America hospitality; in fact, you may just come away thinking that you're really in Mayberry...

Eat at the Chatterbox Cafe. A giant, quarter pound bacon cheeseburger meal is barley over three dollars. You won't go away hungry and you'll have real hamburger served with the comforts of small town service.

Stop next door at The Peoples Meat Market and see Linda about purchasing juicy steaks, walleye fingers..or, perhaps best of all, a kuchen in the flavor of your choice. The demand is so high, they are making 35-40 kuchens every week. Try apricot, cherry, blueberry, pumpkin, apple...even chocolate chip! It's the best kuchen around, so plan to stock up while you're there.

Stroll down the block and stop in at Dale's Hardware. Have a look around as you chat with Dale and Gloria; You'll discover that you can find a part for almost ANYTHING that moves, runs or makes whirring sounds at their hardware store. Afterward, go across the street and fill your tank at Farmers Union Oil...where a kindly older gentleman will be happy to give you directions to any of the nearby attractions.

Outside of Kulm, those attractions include the White Stone Battlefield Monument Site where you can feel the tangible brush with history. Also, drive the roads to neighboring small towns...Lehr, Fredonia, etc. No matter how small the town, they all have little cafes and each one has German Day once a week.

Whether it's a day trip or an extended stay, I highly recommend German Country. Let your cares slip away by driving the two-lane highways and taking in the countryside as well as the culture. It sure made my my week.

Achtung!!!

Now, what other title would you expect when it comes to a blog entry about GERMAN country!!!

Just arrived back from a half-week expedition to "German Country" in southern North Dakota, southeast of Bismarck. Was shooting a HUGE job for a magazine publication with circulation throughout much of the upper Midwest, focusing on the people, the culture, the landmarks and architecture as well as the food in towns populated by German settlers. I met so many great people and drove so many miles and ate so much local ethnic food on this trip...I was thinking the whole time, assignments don't come any better than this.

We'll share some of the images for the article after the publication embargo...and we'll let you know where and when to find it. I did an article last fall on the annual Craft Show in Minot for the same publication...so we'll have a couple major articles for you to look at in the ensuing few months.

Tomorrow, I'll share some travel musts for your own venture to German Country. For now, you can get a little dreamy with me...the scene is from the White Stone Battlefield Monument Site:

The Great Amanda BlogFest

Sooo...I dunno, I expect some of the girls to be saying, 'Hey, Ron, how 'bout WE get a little time on the blog?!'

No problem...but I had to give you a Part Two Post today from the recent shoot with Amanda because there were so many killer shots from our excursion into farm country. Enjoy.
